Profile: Morris Cohen and Morris Cohen

Today, JONJ is five years old!

There also where Morris Cohen, professor at MIT, and Morris Cohen, philosopher... Not as interesting.

Profile: Ajax Amsterdam

Ajax was suggested by "Gascoigne" from Sweden, Arno from Amsterdam, and Felix from Jersey.

Alas, in America, Ajax is best known as a laundry detergent...

Profile: Nevin Shapiro

Shapiro was suggested by Josh from Arizona and Mitch from Lancaster, PA.

Profile: David Draiman

Yakov is once again on vacation. Sigh. Must be nice... must be nice.

Draiman was suggested by Jared from Michigan, Chris from Boston, and Iky from Connecticut.

Profile: Michael Brown

Thanks to a tipster in the Mardy Fish comments for pointing out an error: one of the Michael Browns in the Mike Brown profile, the Nobel Prize winner, is actually a Jew as well. I initially thought of having them share a profile, but no, he deserves a page of his own... be it with exactly the same contents.

Profile: Mardy Fish

Update: No, not a Jew. He is listed all over the Intertubes as Jewish, but... no. Just the wife. Profile has been re-written.

And here's confirmation:

I just got of of the telephone with Tom Fish, Mardy Fish’ father. He said they would be very proud if he was of Jewish heritage but he is NOT nor does he have any Jewish history in the family. Mardy’s wife is Jewish but he did not convert. Tom said he is tired of correcting Wikipedia and has given up.

Mardy's best Grand Slam showing so far is the quarterfinals, but he did win an Olympic silver in 2004, losing to fellow Jew (what are the odds!) Nicolas Massu in the final.

Fish was suggested by Steve from Montville, NJ, Martin from Salt Lake City, Ed from Florida, Leon from Botswana(!), and Valerie from Scarsdale.

Profile: Mike Brown

There are actually many more famous people named Michael Brown out there, but these 12 made the cut.

The hockey Mike Brown was suggested by Michael from LA and Steve from Toronto.

Profile: Peter the Great

Now, granted, Peter's (possible) ancestral Jew is about as far from today's Jew as an Eskimo, but... still.

The family tree (in Russian).

Big thanks to Alex from Maryland for the suggestion.

Profile: Jack Nicholson

This pretty much proves that one can dig up Jewish rumors on almost anybody... Except this guy, of course.

Thursday, August 18, 2011

Profile: Itzhak Perlman

Perlman is a distant cousin of... Howie Mandel.

Perlman was suggested by Jacob from Bloomington, IL, Julie from Cleveland, Ruthie from Israel, Avi from Amstelveen, and Liza from Austin.

Jews in the News: Miami booster Nevin Shapiro

Nevin Shapiro, on the right above (nacht), in jail for running a Ponzi scheme, admitted to some of the biggest violations in college sports history.

Shapiro described a sustained, eight-year run of rampant NCAA rule-breaking, some of it with the knowledge or direct participation of at least seven coaches from the Miami football and basketball programs. At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.

Profile: Elizabeth Israel

One of these days, I'm gonna make a world map and mark each country that has a JONJ profile associated with it.

So... Dominica, ladies and gentlemen!

Profile: Barney Ross

This wasn't planned, but a second Ross in a row? What are the odds?

I originally wanted to do this profile as comic panels, drawn, but then realized neither of us have ANY artistic ability.

Jews in the News: Ralph Branca is Jewish

Quite a few readers sent us a link to this New York Times article that talks of Ralph Branca's surprising Jewish roots. Branca is a former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher famous for surrendering the "Shot Heard 'Round the World".

Profile: Bob Ross

Yakov wanted this profile to be something fancy and interactive, where you'd be able to create your own happy little picture. Alas...

Profile: William Herschel

Esther from Canada asks us to profile John Herschel, "the discoverer of one of my favorite stars, Betelgeuse". If only I had a favorite star...

In any case, William was John's father.

Profile: Jason Kipnis

Kipnis was suggested by long-time, multiple-times-over returnee Bruce from Camrbdige, IL, as well as Eddie from New York, Dave from New Hampshire, and Eric from Cleveland.

Alas, dear readers. Alas.

Profile: Felonious Gru

Apparently, Yakov has not only been compared to Seth Rogen... But now to Gru as well. Go figure.

Gru was also suggested by Joshua from Atlanta and Anita from Northampton, MA.

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Profile: Mel Blanc

I suggested to Yakov that we run Blanc on April Fools Day, with one line: "That's All, Folks!"... but... well, here it is... A perfect score!

Blanc was suggested by Miriam from Burbank, Alan from NYC, Dave from Canada, Don from LA, Mark from New York, Jason from Vancouver, and Allan from Southern Cal.

Monday, August 8, 2011

We're quite tired of all the Kate Middleton rumors, but... when International Business Times calls us "an authority on celebrity Judaism", who are we to argue?

Profile: Marcello Mastroianni

Mastroianni is one of three actors to win the Best Actor award at Cannes twice. The others? Jack Lemmon and Dean Stockwell. Go figure.

Mastroianni was suggested by returning suggesters Mila from Alexandria and Alex from Maryland, as well as J K from Minneapolis.

Thursday, August 4, 2011

Profile: Fred Wilpon

Yakov wants to make sure this profile runs before Wilpon sells off even more of his team...

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Profile: Leonard Susskind

Almost the perfect score here... But not quite. Can't hand them out to every comer, after all.

Susskind was suggested by returning suggester Mara from Kansas.

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Profile: Charley Steiner

After leaving ESPN, Steiner did play-by-play for the Yankees and now the Dodgers.

Monday, August 1, 2011

Profile: Stephanie Zimbalist

I was always more of a Moonlighting fan than Remington Steele when it came to 80's "will they or won't they" mystery shows. But we're sans-Jews at the Blue Moon Detective Agency, so Zimbalist will have to do.
