Yes, it took me 30+ years to see "Casablanca"...

Suggestions by Pablo from Venezuela, Michael from Maryland, Glenn from Queens, and Rebecca from Oregon.

  1. Stunning! Per Wikipedia the information was given to Miss Bergman on the QT with the warning that it might be best closely held in anticipation of dark times to come. Does help to explain her participation in Casablanca at the risk of her reputation in Germany and German-held countries, a large marketplace at the time. Her own Sweden was "carefully neutral" to quote Casablanca. She spoke German and according to one history book once emerged thrilled from one of Goebbels' speeches. But she hardly appears thrilled with Major Strasser, recalling "what German guarantees have been worth in the past." Hitler feared people of "mixed race" for good reason.

  2. Stretching the Jew-theme further in that film ... Humphrey Bogart married a Jew.:)

  3. I can't believe you haven't mentioned that Ingrid played Golda Meir in what was her last role. Hashem, what what a miscast that was!

  4. Golda is listed in the See Also section for a reason... :)

  5. Zev! That was not a Swedish aunt who told her, it was Elsa Adler, on her mother's side. The other side would have likely kept the secret; the Jewish side would pass it along.

  6. Keep mining Casablanca for the Jews. Hal Wallis, Producer. Dalio, Croupier. Sakall, the Waiter. Bois, the Pickpocket and Kinskey, the Bartender.
There was a Website, Casablanca: The Jewish Connection.
    Can anyone find it?

  8. Recently it has been shown that none of her ancestors were Jewish. One of her cousins did a genealogical study and all of her ancestors, Swedish and German, were non-Jews.
