Funny thing is, when NYPD Blue first came out, my mom would insist the character was Jewish because it's pronounced "witz", like "Sipowitz". I pointed out that it's spelled "wicz" ("Sipowicz") and that when it's spelled like that it's usually Polish Catholic (and only very rarely Jewish).
While they never really pointed it out, I'm pretty sure his character wasn't Jewish.
