Speaking of Jaffa oranges, you don't often see them in America either (even in places like NY) given our huge production in FL and CA. However, for geographic reasons, then and now a lot of oranges sold in Europe are Jaffa.
But as a kid (I was 10 at the time), I remember a story about Palestinian terrorists poisoning the oranges and when the dust cleared they were for awhile available in America (at least in the NY area) as a "show of support", etc. I tried to look this up (even the Wikipedia article on Jaffa oranges didn't mention this) and found this:
