According to Moishe, Cristina Yang was suggested by.....me!? I have no idea how this happened. I haven't watched Grey's Anatomy in 2 years. Haven't cared about it for 3. Can't imagine what conversation we were having that brought it up. Anyway, it's Cristina Yang! Hooray?
Yeah, I know, we all would've been a lot more excited about this in 2005. Maybe I can profile some random Jewish character from Ally McBeal next...
"We'll have a Jewish president before we have a cute, Jewish female main character on a major network. "
ReplyDeleteOff the top of my head, what about Grace (Debra Messing) in Will & Grace? Very explicitly Jewish, main character, as cute as Messing was back in the day (very). There was also Sela Ward's character in Once & Again, who was half Jewish. I'm sure there are others.
So, who was our first Jewish president, then? Ronald Reagan, perhaps? Always looked it.
Sela Ward? Once & Again? Please.
ReplyDeleteAs for Grace... oooh. Close one. But it was Debra Messing herself that insisted that Grace was made Jewish. So it wasn't for the network's or the show creators' doing, that's for sure.
There's also Dharma Finkelstein from Dharma & Greg, Monica Geller on Friends, and Lisa Cuddy on House (fairly close to being a leading character).
ReplyDeleteAlso Dr. Ivanonva on Babylon 5, though it wasn't a major network show.
Wow - can't a guy make a random, unsubstantiated comment on the Internet anymore?
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, though, I still don't think any of these counts as leading women the way Meredith Grey is. And calling Cuddy a "leading character" is seriously stretching things. The show is called "House" for a reason people.
