  3. I have no doubt at all that Ponomaryova was picked at the highest level because Gorokhovskaya was Jewish.

    Gorokhovskaya went to great pains to conceal her ethnicity, changing her patronymic from the "incriminating" Isidorovna to the clearly Russian Kondratievna. But of course the Soviet officials knew.
