In the first film, where the pie scene you're talking about takes place, the character isn't explicitly Jewish. His surname being "Levenstein" isn't mentioned until part 2, and very briefly there, and then the character is explicitly mentioned as being Jewish in part 3.
He was more or less still the biggest dork in part 3 as well, though.

Ironically, Jason Biggs, who played him, is not Jewish but everyone thinks he is.....
