I was always sure she is full-blooded. Dad is a German Jew, mom came from Russia in the 1980s, which makes her more likely Jewish than not, grandparents in Israel. The only thing is, she celebrates Christmas and Hanukkah, but many immigrants' kids do it, to fit in. Russians especially, as it's basically the same as our New Year.
P.S. My family is Russian Jewish, and we celebrate both holidays -- but Hanukkah and NEW YEAR, not Hanukkah and Christmas. And I would never ever say we celebrate Christmas...
No 'Hanukkah Bush'! I can understand the wanting to 'fit in' and guess that many American Indians 'celebrate' Thanksgiving too, but that didn't work out too well for them either!
But seeing as celebrating New Year involves putting up a decorated tree, laying presents under it, telling kids they are from a white-bearded magical man from the North and eating a family dinner on the eve of the holiday, telling Americans, "Yeah, we celebrate Christmas, too" may be a bit easier than explaining the subtle differences.
(Not that I would do it, mind you. In my house, we have the New Year's Fir and nobody dares to call it anything else. But an old Soviet immigrant who named her kid Michelle Christine (and I've seen Russian Jewish girls named Angelina, too) this would be par for the course.)
Another possibility is something like Sarah Michelle Gellar....who is 100% Jewish but family follows some "Christian" practices for some odd reason....
So?!? Doesn't make her Catholic. Millions of Jews have been persecuted and rejected over the years for not being invited or more importantly accpeted into golf clubs or yacht clubs. She probably had to hide her true i.d. unfortunately. E.g. She made up her name or whatever. Poor Michelle.

ReplyDeleteYes, it's very likely that mom is Jewish, but it's also not clear WHICH grandparents live in Israel. Mom could also be half, in theory.
ReplyDeleteAnd her middle name is Christine...

Not disagreeing. But there is no proof...

ReplyDeleteWell, since you have Stanley Kubrick (100% Jewish by blood) as Borderline for celebrating Christmas, at least your criteria is consistent.
ReplyDeleteActually, just updated Kubrick. Christmas or not, he didn't convert out. And in his case, 100% Jewish by birth. Michelle? No proof, alas.
ReplyDeleteMichelle Trachtenberg attended Notre Dame Catholic HIgh School In Sherman Oaks, CA. Just sayin'
