I don't remember how I ran into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, but when I did, I just had to write about it...

  1. Meryl Streep is Jewish.

  2. You gave her an 8. Called her "barely a Jew." Let the reader decide.

  3. Well, yeah, the only reason we can't give her "Not a Jew" is because she shares a very, very distant relative with Mike Nichols. This is barely, barely, barely a Jew.

  4. Arthur Leonard Schawlow's father was Jewish... (your laser profile).

As for Meryl Streep. Well, everyone shares a distant ancestor with everyone. On the same show (Faces of America), it showed that Eva Longoria shared a distant ancestor with Yo-Yo Ma, Mike Nichols also shared a distant ancestor with Stephen Colbert (who shared a distant ancestor with Streep), and Mike Nichols and Dr. Mehmet Oz shared the same patrilineal (father's father's father's father) ancestor, who was presumably Abraham.

  5. You're right, and we actually have no way of knowing if the Streep/Nichols ancestor was Jewish. So she is back to "Not a Jew".

    1. Mike Nichols is unlikely to have any recent non-Jewish ancestry. But he could have had a non-Jewish ancestor something like 1000 years ago. Of course, all Germans and all Ashkenazi Jews would have this person as their ancestor (probably several times over) by now. That is how genealogy works.

Indeed, I would say all non-Jewish Europeans have a Jewish ancestor at some point in the last 1000 or 2000 years. Anything else is pretty much impossible.

  6. Don't quote me exactly but Perry Farrell (lead singer from Jane's Addiction / Porno For Pyro's) said: "We're all Jewish!" :)
