Hollywood often de-Semitizes stories for mass consumption. Speaking of Carl Reiner, he was the original star of what came to be The Dick Van Dyke Show. Reiner's pilot--which was far less appealing than the final product--is floating around on the internet. Even Jewish stories like Herman Wouk's Marjorie Morningstar had non-Jewish leads: Gene Kelly and Natalie Wood.
