Any great artist has a large amount of mediocre output and some gems. Review the Beatles, lyrics and songs of Cole Porter. And they all have editors, collaborators, often quite unsung or even hidden. No one makes a movie alone. Look at Warner Bros in the '40's. A few greats like Casablanca and much crap, unwatchable today. Wouldn't you like to be judged by your best work, too. And yes there is luck and randomness. The original Star Wars was buffed to near-perfection by dozens of writers, set designers, etc. Take a look at some of the outtakes: there's stuff that wouldn't cut it in an 8mm high school film class.
