That's it for Jewish Harts, we promise (for we already profiled Mary Hart...)

  1. The profile of Cecil Hart contains a major error. The Hart Trophy is not given to the leading scorer, that's the Art Ross Trophy. The Hart Memorial Trophy is given to the league MVP.

  2. My bad! Stupid NHL award names...

    1. Thanks for making the correction. BTW, Frederick Arthur Stanley was better known as Lord Stanley of Preston. But, then, he wasn't a Jew, so who cares?

    2. To be precise, he was Lord Stanley of Preston when the cup was commissioned in 1892, but the 16th Earl of Derby by the time it was first awarded on May 15th 1893.

  3. Ice hockey used to be a thing in Britain (not a big thing, but still a thing). Lord Stanley, the British Governor General of Canada, was a fan, as were his children. Apart from creating the Stanley cup, they helped introduce hockey to Europe, defeating a court team that included the future kings Edward VII and George V! Meanwhile, the Cambridge-Oxford Varsity Ice Hockey match is one of the oldest rivalries in ice hockey, dating from sometime between 1885 and 1895.

In 1924, the UK won the hockey bronze at the Olympics. The following year, the Prince of Wales (and future Edward VIII) sponsored a new trophy. See the original announcement here:
