Not a Bolshevik, actually. He was a Left Social Revolutionary (an SR). Which, ultimately, led to his rift with Lenin and Dzerzhinsky. But it is true that he, very unusually and maybe uniquely among Russian revolutionary Jews, was very observant, perhaps even Orthodox.
