  1. There is a Yiddish proverb that distills all of your comments into one:
"If my grandmother had balls she'd be my grandfather."

  2. Just out of curiosity. How do you- (because I'd like to do it myself) how do you sort out fact from fiction in the case of say Russian Psychopath Lavrentiy Beria?? You say something like that many websites claim that he is Jewish... So... how did you find out the information that he is NOT, what made you come to the conclusion? What did you do? I mean if 20 websites say he is Jewish and only 2 (save for yours) say he's not... How do you determine who IS and who ISN'T Jewish? Do you systematically wipe out something just because you don't approve of it or like the sound of it? I'm not being sarcastic or mean or anti-Semitic or anything negative, like that... I am just curious... Because if majority dicatates (Like it always does, unfortunatley) then surely the fact that MANY websites claim that he is Jewish should outweigh the opposite... that indeed this man was Jewish. Again... How do you measure the good from the bad information...? Just curious...

  3. Well, you need to learn how to weed our real sources from fake ones. Here's a hint: if the origin of the rumor is an anti-semitic website, disregard it.

  4. Well, yeah, but... Some websites that are not anti-Semitic do still claim that (for example) Lavrentiy Beria is Jewish. Off the top of my head pro-Jewish website's like: WhoJew and Jeiwsh Virtual Library... (I think that's what they're called) don't quote me on that.)think he was Jewish. P.S. You should have a section where people can write to you, apart from this blog.

  5. A quick search shows that neither WhoJew or JVL list Beria. And JVL has been wrong before.

  6. Hey Anon,

If you go to the flagship, there's a link "suggestion box" that allows you to e-mail us rather than just post on the blog.

If your question is really specifically about Beria then the answer is simply that we have more knowledge of that particular person than maybe your standard Jew-profiling web site. I'm sorry if that sounds like a cop out, but the truth is some people are just in our wheelhouse and former Soviets are part of that group.

If your question is more generally, 'gee I really like rating Jews and would like to do it myself in my spare time', well, we do as much research as possible. It's not a matter of our opinion, and when it does come down to that, we don't run the profile until we confirm. When you do this as much as we do you make connections, you develop a 'feel' and you learn what to trust and what not to. And occasionally you still get fooled. But we've been doing this for years now and it's become something of a skill.
And yes, this is why Zev answers these things most of the time. I have a tendency to ramble incoherently...

  7. No, no, Yakov. I like where you were going with this. You did not Ramble Incoherently at all! And while I do usually perfer short and sweet answers like Zev's. (I have an attention span of a Moth) I DID read what you said and it was AWESOME! Okay? Don't be so hard on yourself. Thank-you, very much. :)
